<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that suppresses changes in the speed of a toner image carrier belt, which is caused when a sheet-like member enters a transfer nip. <P>SOLUTION: Based on rotation information from a rotary encoder, an inrush detecting portion 25 compares the linear velocity of an entrance roller 4 with the threshold value of a linear velocity stored in a memory 27 in advance. If the linear velocity of the entrance roller 4 exceeds the threshold value, the inrush detecting portion 25 outputs an inrush detection signal to a drive control section 28.
