PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical edge detector capable of performing high-accruacy, numerical, noncontact, and real-time measurements on the contour shape of an edge, even for a shape which cannot be projected as a silhouette, of a work, etc., in the middle of machining. SOLUTION: The edge detector includes a projection optical system provided with an anti-pinhole filter 25 for shielding the light, in parallel with the optical axis 16a of the projection optical system; a light source module 11 arranged at a prescribed angle θ of deviation to the optical axis 16a of the projection optical system, an imaging element 26; and a computer. A projection image by reflected light from the work 17, irradiated with a parallel light of the light source module 11, is imaged by an imaging element and the intensity of signals in the vicinity of the edge is determined and a linear low-luminance part between two strip high-luminance parts as an edge is determined. COnsequently it is possible to accurately detect the edge of the work and to operatively connect it with CAD and NC control, by numerically processing it by image processing.
