PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair conditioning composition giving improved conditioning effects, especially improved slippery feeling when applied to wet hair. SOLUTION: The hair conditioning composition comprises (a) 0.1-10 wt.% cationic surfactant, (b) 2.5-15 wt.% high melting point fatty compound based on the composition, and (c) an aqueous carrier, wherein the cationic surfactant is a salt of a mono long alkyl quaternized ammonium and an anion (the anion is selected from the group consisting of 1-4C alkyl sulfates) or a mixture thereof, the cationic surfactant, the high melting point fatty compound and the aqueous carrier form a lamellar gel matrix, the lamellar gel matrix is prepared by a step of mixing the cationic surfactant, the high melting point fatty compound and the carrier at 80-90°C and a step of gradually cooling the mixture to a temperature lower than 55°C at a rate of 1-5°C/min, the d-spacing of the lamellar layers is in the range of 33 nm or less, and the composition has yield stress of 30 Pa or more at 26.7°C.
