<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a process time required to prevent irregular color caused by colors of ink being superposed in different order. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When even one of a plurality of detection blocks set along a border in an Nth scanning region with an (N+1)th scanning region meets banding image conditions, it is determined that a banding image exists in the Nth scanning region, so as to control recording so that the (N+1)th scanning region is scanned in the same scanning direction as the Nth scanning region. Since determinations of the existence of the banding image are made not based on all pixels in the detection block, but based on only representative pixels set as a part of the pixels, the process time required to prevent banding is reduced. Especially, since the representative pixels are arranged so that one or more representative pixels exist for each x-coordinate, and one or more representative pixels exist for each y-coordinate of the detection block, the potential for erroneous determination is reduced.
