<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an excellent printer which can surely replace a cartridge in the printer having an interlocking mechanism. <P>SOLUTION: A carriage moves to a specified replacement position when a print cartridge is replaced. When the carriage has moved to the replacement position, and a maintenance cover is opened, when the carriage has been shifted from the replacement position, this fact is notified to a user by a notification means.
