PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve responsibility when the location of a boundary between an active arc region and an idle arc region is detected. SOLUTION: A belt type continuously variable transmission 10 is equipped with: a belt 12; an input side variable pulley 20 and an output side variable pulley 30 to which this belt 12 is wound; a first gap sensor 62 and second gap sensor 64 for detecting a yawing angleθof a belt block 42 held by the input side variable pulley 20; and an ECU 70 detecting the location of a boundary P between an active arc regionαin which the belt blocks 42 held by the input side variable pulley 20 are arranged without a space and an idle arc regionβin which the belt blocks 42 held by the input side variable pulley 20 are arranged with a space, based on detected results by the first gap sensor 62 and second gap sensor 64.
