PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the exhaust performance of an engine during the start-up by securing swirl during the start-up. SOLUTION: This engine with a variable valve gear includes a first intake valve and a second intake valve installed in one cylinder and driven by a second intake cam, and a cam phase variable mechanism for varying the phase of the second intake cam. The cam phase variable mechanism is controlled so that the valve opening timing of the second intake valve is further spark-advanced than the valve opening timing of the first intake valve during the start-up.
