The method involves monitoring a surrounding field of a foot pedal (1) with respect to a foot movement, and displacing a brake device from a normal condition into an emergency mode when dynamics of the foot movement fulfill a predetermined criterion. A brake actuator is activated in the emergency mode to apply a brake pad, and a brake light of a motor vehicle is switched-on in the emergency mode, where the actuator is designed as a hydraulic pump or an electric motor. Brightness of the switched-on brake light is increased by decreasing distance of a foot (3) to the pedal. An independent claim is also included for a brake device in a motor vehicle.
