The device (1) has a lower jaw (2) whose front edge is provided with a supporting surface for a workpiece (11) to be clamped, where the supporting surface is provided in a horizontal plane. Brackets (3) are arranged above the lower jaw. The brackets are pivotally mounted at an upper side of the lower jaw in an area of rear ends so that the brackets are guided against the upper side of the lower jaw by actuation of a clamping unit. Front edges (17) of the brackets are pressed against an upper side of the workpiece lying on the supporting surface.
