A method of treating sulphur-containing metallurgical slag having as ingredients iron and a smaller amount of a metal of the group copper, nickel and cobalt or mixtures thereof, comprises introducing into the slag an amount of reducing agent not greater than 50 per cent of that required to precipitate all the iron from the slag, bringing the slag to a molten state thereby precipitating substantially all of the said metal and only a small proportion of the iron as matte and forming a secondary slag, and separating the matte from the secondary slag, the reducing agent being selected from the group ferro-silicon, and an alloy of silicon, aluminium and iron. The amount of reducing agent used may be not greater than 35 or even 20 per cent of that necessary to precipitate all the iron. The secondary slag may be mixed with lime and a material capable of reducing ferrous oxide to metal, the mixture being melted to precipitate iron which is then separated. The reducing agent may be ferro-silicon calcium carbide or an alloy of silicon, aluminium and iron.
|
