The device (1) has an energy absorption element (4) arranged in a housing (2) and connected to the housing by a hinge (20), where the energy absorption element is formed as a single piece with the housing. The energy absorption element includes a hollow energy absorption stud (14) projecting from the housing, where the device is made of plastic material. Another stud (12) is flattened by absorbing energy in case of impact between the driver and a steering column. The housing forms a lower half shell extended under the steering column. An independent claim is also included for a method for fabricating an energy absorption device.
