<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit which has high quality and high luminance uniformity while having a thin thickness, and provide an image display using the backlight unit. <P>SOLUTION: In the backlight unit, a plurality of sets, which comprise light sources (1) and light guide plate (2) for guiding the light obtained from the light source to the side of a liquid crystal panel and ejecting the light, are provided, and the light source is disposed on one end side of the light guide plate, and further, the light source of other set is disposed on the back surface side of the other end of the light guide plate which is opposed to the one end side. A space or groove (4) is formed between the light guide plates of a plurality of sets. When representing the width of the spacer or groove as d, and representing the distance between the incident surface of the liquid crystal panel and the light ejecting surface of the light guide plate, i.e., the distance between the light incident surface of an optical member (5) disposed on the back surface of the liquid crystal panel and the light ejecting surface of the light guide plate, as h, and further, giving the conditions of 2.0 mm≥d≥0.1 mm and 10.0 mm≥h≥0.4 mm, the condition of 4≤h/d≤100 is satisfied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
