The belt retractor has a speed-controlled force limiting unit (4) for enabling a strength-limited belt strap extraction. A belt shaft (1) is pivot mounted in a retractor frame (3). A blocking device is provided for blocking the belt shaft by exceeding a given value of belt extraction acceleration or a vehicle delay opposite to the retractor frame in a belt extraction direction.
