PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter capable of maintaining a condition wherein a pinion and a ring gear are engaged with each other in the state of stopping an engine without providing a plunger stopper using a solenoid or the like. SOLUTION: This starter is adapted to maintain a condition wherein a pinion and a ring gear are engaged with each other in the state of stopping an engine by shifting resistance to be caused in shifting of a power transmitting element. Practically, since an angle of inclination of a helical spline in a helical spline engagement part provided on the outer periphery of an output shaft of a starter motor and on the inner periphery of the power transmitting element is set at an angle for maintaining the condition wherein the pinion and the ring gear are engaged with each other in a stop of the engine, the condition wherein the pinion and the ring gear are engaged with each other when the engine is stopped can be maintained without providing a plunger stopper using a solenoid or the like.
