<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform excellent character recognition processing even when characters are multicolored or handwritten characters or handwritten graphs overlap with printed characters. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image processor identifies an image area including printed character strings from an input image, cuts out a region that is estimated to include one printed character from the identified image area by use of a character frame of such a size that a margin can be formed around the one printed character, detects a stroke contacting the character frame, extracts a stroke group that can be considered to be a series with the stroke, and removes the stroke group from the image included in the character frame, while leaving a part of the stroke group that is estimated to overlap with the printed character.
