<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process which efficiently and stably produces the powder of low-molecular weight high purity polyphenylene ether while inhibiting a polymer loss due to scales. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The process for producing the polyphenylene ether comprises adding 0.1-40 mass% good solvent (B) based on the entire amount of a phenolic compound (A) (in terms of monomer) present in a polymerization tank to a polymerization solvent after the conversion of the phenolic compound (A) comes to 60% or more.
