PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for displaying an image, displaying a single pixel of an image by using many different parts of an output device such as an LCD display. SOLUTION: A gray scale display includes a display where a resolution in a first dimension, for example, a horizontal dimension, is several times a resolution in a second dimension, for example, a vertical dimension. Various other displays are operable both as gray scale and color displays. In one such display, a color filter used to implement a color part of the display is omitted from another, e.g., gray scale part of the same display. In such an embodiment, a text such as a caption is displayed by using the gray scale part of the display, while a color image such as graphics is displayed on the color part of the display.
