PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus of which the time required for a starting process when a main power source is started and a returning process when returning from a sleep mode are shortened increasing neither the cost nor the size of the apparatus, and to provide a control method for the image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, a controlling controller section measures the passage of time up to receiving of a communication command from an image processing controller section when the main power source is started. The controlling controller section executes the starting process of an image processing section independently prior to reception of the communication command when the communication command is not received before the passage of time exceeds the first prescribed time.
