Provided is a highly safe portable electronic device having a high operability. The device has an image projecting section which projects an image, a detecting section which detects a predetermined change in an irradiation region of light radiated from the image projecting section or in a predetermined region, including the irradiation region, and a control section which controls the operations of the image projecting section. When the detecting section detects the predetermined change, the control section stops light output from the image projecting section or reduces the quantity of light to be outputted from the image projecting section.
