PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus adjusting apparatus and a focus adjusting method which can certainly adjust focus. SOLUTION: A high-frequency component used for focus detection by an AF evaluation processing circuit 114 is extracted from an output signal of an imaging device (CCD) 104 as a focus voltage (AF evaluation value). A camera AF microcomputer (which serves as an inhibiting device, a controlling device, and a comparing and determining device) 115 moves a focus lens 105 with an actuator 110 and a driver 113 in the direction of optical axis so as to maximize the focus voltage. The camera AF microcomputer 115 moves the focus lens 105 in the direction of increasing the AF evaluation value and inhibits the lens from moving in the same direction predetermined successive times at the same time and reverses the moving direction of the focus lens 105.
