<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and an image forming apparatus, capable of suppressing degradation in quality of a read image which is caused by occurrence of vertical streak or the like, and capable of suppressing degradation in productivity when reading images of originals in such condition as a plurality of originals are transported in series. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When an original image is read, a first contact glass 154 is moved in the same direction as transportation direction of an original at a speed of V<SB>scan</SB>, and after the original image is read (after the tail end of original passes a reading position), the first contact glass 154 is moved in the same direction as the transportation direction of original at maximum speed V<SB>max</SB>. Even if returning of the first contact glass 154 to a home position is not completed, the first contact glass 154 is moved in the same direction as the transportation direction of original at the speed of V<SB>scan</SB>when the front end of original reaches a front end detection position of original.
