<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a plasma display panel of high-definition/high-luminance display performance and of low power consumption. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A method of manufacturing the plasma display panel has a sealing step of placing a front plate 2 and a rear plate 10 opposite each other and sealing their edge portions with a sealant member. A protective layer 9 for the front plate 2 is formed from metal oxides selected from magnesium oxides, calcium oxides, strontium oxides and barium oxides. The sealing step comprises: a gas flowing step of flowing a dried gas through a through-hole opened in a discharge space provided in the rear plate 10 so as to put the discharge space under a positive pressure; and an exhaustion step of exhausting the gas within the discharge space at a temperature higher than a softening point of the sealant member after the front plate 2 and the rear plate 10 are sealed with the sealant member.
