A method for detecting changes in a human or animal eye comprising illuminating the eye or at least a part thereof, in particular the lens and/or cornea, using light at a red edge excitation wavelength; detecting fluorescence caused by the red edge excitation and using the detected fluorescence to detect or identify structural defects or changes in the eye.
