<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal vapor discharge lamp capable of suppressing enlargement of an illumination device while maintaining safety. <P>SOLUTION: When a force such as gravity and inertia works against the protective tube 11 in a protective tube 11 direction and toward a bottom of a protective tube 11, the protective tube 11 is locked with a base 40, and, therefore, when a force such as gravity and inertia works to the protective tube 11 in a length direction of the protective tube and toward the bottom of the protective tube 11 and even if a heat resistant adhesive agent for jointing the protective tube 11 with the base 40 falls off completely due to certain handling conditions of a user, the protective tube 11 can be suppressed from easily falling off.
