PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focusing device and method for quickly focusing on a subject to be focused even when a scene changes. SOLUTION: The focusing device has: a photoelectric conversion means for converting a subject image into an electric signal; an extracting means for extracting signal components regarding the luminance of the subject from an output signal from the photoelectric conversion means; a control means; and a state detecting means. The control means performs a first AF scan operation for specifying a subject area to be focused by performing an AF scan operation for acquiring an output signal of the extracting means in a set focus detection area in relation to the position of a focus lens before photographing preparation. The control means performs a second AF scan operation different from the first AF scan operation by performing an AF scan operation to carry out a focusing operation in photographing preparation. The control means carries out the first AF scan operation afterward when a change in a photographing scene state is detected by the state detecting means before photographing preparation.
