PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map display system which can display a mark for allowing a user to recognize the positional relationship between a scrolled map and a present position without giving him/her an uncomfortable feeling. SOLUTION: The map display system includes a present position detector 14 for detecting the present position of the system main unit and a control circuit 11 which allows the display screen of a display monitor 16 to display a first map and a present position mark of the system main unit and determines whether or not the present position is displayed on the fist map displayed on the display monitor 16 when the displayed first map is scrolled. When it is determined that the present position is not displayed, the control circuit 11 allows a small screen which is smaller than the display screen to be displayed together with the first map. In the small screen, a second map around the map position of the present position mark is displayed. The small screen is displayed at a position which allows the map direction of the present position mark of the small screen with respect to the center of the display screen to be aligned with the direction of the map position of the present position mark with respect to the position on the first map corresponding to the center of the display screen.
