PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus adjusting apparatus and method capable of improving an image look prior to image-taking preparation operation if there is less luminance difference in an image plane when an object area to be focused in the image plane is determined and focused prior to the image-taking preparation operation. SOLUTION: The focus adjusting apparatus includes a focus lens, a photoelectric conversion means for converting an object image taken by using the focus lens into an electrical signal, an extraction means for extracting a signal component in a specific frequency band of the luminance of an object from an output signal of the photoelectric conversion means, and a control means. The control means performs a first AF scan operation for specifying the object area to be focused prior to the image-taking preparation operation. The control means performs a second AF scan operation different from the first AF scan operation to perform focus adjusting operation when performing the image-taking preparation operation.
