<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately determine which of monochrome images or color images are read image data. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus includes: an image read part for reading image data from an original W; a connection number setting part 18b for setting a connection number which is the number of pixels continued in a main scanning direction and a sub-scanning direction to the attention pixel of the image data read by the image read part; a color pixel number calculation part 18c for calculating the number of the attention pixels for which the attention pixel and the pixels for the connection number in the main scanning direction and the sub-scanning direction to the attention pixel are all color pixels as a color pixel number; and an image color determination part 18d for determining that the image data are the color image data when the color pixel number calculated by the color pixel number calculation part 18c exceeds a prescribed color pixel threshold.
