PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interferometric modulator-based display wherein the inner surface side of a backplate includes an electronic circuitry. SOLUTION: The display includes: a transparent substrate 104; an array 102 of interferometric modulators comprising reflective elements that are configured to reflect light through the transparent substrate; a backplane 108 comprising a first surface proximal to the array of interferometric modulators and fabricated electronic circuitry 114 so as to control the displacement of the reflective elements on the first surface; and a plurality of electrical connections providing electronic communication between the electronic circuitry on the backplane and the array of interferometric modulators.
