<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope apparatus capturing a high-quality image by increasing the luminance of an observation light source and increasing the number of pixels of an imaging element without affecting the human body due to heat generated at the distal end of an endoscope, and maintaining a narrow diameter of an endoscope insertion part when the endoscope is inserted. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the endoscope apparatus 100, an illumination optical system and an imaging optical system are disposed within the distal end of the endoscope insertion part 21. The endoscope apparatus 100 includes: a temperature state detecting means for detecting the state quantity related to the temperature state on the surface of the distal end of the endoscope insertion part 21; an expansion member 45 disposed on the outer circumference of the distal end of the endoscope insertion part 21 to be extended in the direction of expanding the diameter; and a control means for driving the expansion of the expansion member 45 and driving the contraction after the expansion driving according to the result of detection by the temperature state detecting means. The control method of the endoscope apparatus 100 is to drive expansion of the expansion member 45 by detecting the temperature information on the surface of the distal end of the endoscope insertion part 21 and comparing the detected temperature information with reference temperature information.
