<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a capacity necessary for a memory when a pixel is turned on or off by a plurality of sub-fields to display an intermediate tone. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A frame is divided into sub-fields sf1 to sf16, sixteen sub-fields are classified into four sub-field groups. A video signal is converted into SF-designated data to be stored in a memory, and an SF bit designating a display state of a pixel in each of the sixteen sub-fields sf1 to sf16 is output on the basis of the stored SF-designated data. For the SF-designated data, "use"/"nonuse" of each sub-field group is defined by higher four bits, and a display state of the pixel is designated in each of the four sub-fields belonging to the "use" sub-field group by lower four bits.
