The present invention relates to an Ecklonia cava extract with skin whitening activity, more specifically to a pharmaceutical composition and a cosmetic composition for skin whitening containing Ecklonia cava extract which has an inhibition activity on tyrosinase and melanin biosynthesis, and a phlorotannin compound isolated from the same. According to the present invention, the Ecklonia cava extract and a component thereof, 7-phloroeckol, have a strong inhibition effect on mushroom tyrosinase. Especially, 7-phloroeckol has a significant inhibition effect on mushroom tyrosinase and melanogenesis in melanoma cells.
