<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve character recognizing precision by specifying the connection point of characters in either a horizontal direction and a vertical direction to correctly separate those characters. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A character recognition method includes steps of: extracting the contours of a character string by using a differential filter from image data; calculating the sign of a differential value by the differential filter about each of elements configuring vertical contours and horizontal contours among the extracted contours; extracting a first region with a pixel under consideration as a center from among pixels configuring the vertical contours and the horizontal contours; calculating the number of pixels indicating the same signs and the number of pixels indicating opposite signs by comparing the signs of the pixels included in the first region with the sign of the pixel under consideration; determining the contrast of the first region based on the number of the same signs or the opposite signs; and define the pixels showing the signs contrary to the determination result in the first region as the division point of the character string.
