PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent device having superior durability with respect to oxygen. SOLUTION: An organic electroluminescent device which includes a pair of electrodes consisting of an anode and a cathode and, sandwiched therebetween, an organic layer containing a metal coordination compound represented by formula (1), ML<SB>a</SB>X<SB>b</SB>(1). In the formula (1), the M is a metal ion in the group 11 of the periodic table, the L is a ligand represented by formula (2), and the X is an anion. The (a) is a number of 0<a≤6, and the (b) is a number larger than or equal to 0. In the formula (2), the (A) is a divalent radical that excludes two hydrogen atoms from the formula (3) or the formula (4), and the D<SP>1</SP>, k<SP>1</SP>, m<SP>1</SP>, A, D<SP>1</SP>, Q<SP>1</SP>and Q<SP>2</SP>are predetermined. In the formula (3) or the formula (4), X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, X<SP>3</SP>, X<SP>4</SP>, X<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>and R<SP>9</SP>are predetermined.
