<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machining method suitable for machining a mold for such an optical element as represented by a diffraction lens and capable of forming a precise machined surface. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The machining method retracts a diamond tool T, upon completion of machining a groove structure G2, from the mold M to prevent wear and moves the tool to a reference position for a groove structure G3 (refer to a bold arrow in Fig. 3). By subsequently cutting steps in ascending order of depths, a stepped portion can be accurately formed with less corner sagging by a corner C2 suppressed in the amount of wear.
