PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of effectively preventing charging failure caused by foreign substances in a charging means. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes a photoreceptor drum 2, a charging roller 3, a transfer roller 17, a cleaning device 9 disposed on the upstream side of the charging roller 3 and downstream side of the transfer roller 17 with respect to the rotation direction of the photoreceptor drum 2 at the image formation, and an auxiliary cleaning member 25 disposed between the charging roller 3 and the cleaning device 9. The photoreceptor drum 2 is rotated at predetermined timing in the reverse direction with respect to the rotation direction at the image formation until foreign substances deposited on the photoreceptor drum 2 in the periphery of the auxiliary cleaning member 25 are moved to the transfer roller 17 side with respect to a cleaning blade 22.
