<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing a sulfone compound that is an important intermediate for producing a carotenoid. Ž<P>SOLUTION: There is provided a method for producing a sulfone compound represented by formula (1), which can be produced by a process of reacting a compound represented by formula (3) with a chlorate or a bromate and subsequently reacting the resulting reaction liquid with HX or X<SB>2</SB>to obtain a compound represented by formula (4); a process of reacting the compound represented by formula (4) with a halogenation agent or with M(OCOR)<SB>n</SB>to obtain a compound represented by formula (5) or formula (6) respectively; or a process of reacting the compound represented by formula (5) or formula (6) with an inorganic base to obtain a compound represented by formula (7).
