The present invention relates to a wireless access system, and more particularly, to a method for carrying out a hand-over through zone switching, and to an apparatus for performing same. A method for enabling a new user equipment to perform zone switching in a broadband wireless access system, according to one embodiment of the present invention, comprises the steps of: transmitting, to a first zone for supporting a legacy terminal of a base station, a first message in which a bit for making a request for a zone switch to a second zone that supports the new user equipment of the target base station is set; and receiving, from the first zone, a second message containing information indicating whether or not to accept the zone switch.
