PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve accuracy of detecting a position of a target object and detect a position of the target object in a short time period (at high speed) even when an image pickup environment of an input image is changed. SOLUTION: A position detector 10 includes: a luminance conversion processing section 16 for converting luminance of an input image to generate a conversion processed image; a template matching processing section 24 for detecting a position of a hole photographed in the input image by performing template matching between the input image and a reference image and calculating a correlation value between the input image and the reference image in the position while detecting a position of a hole photographed in the conversion processed image by performing template matching between the conversion processed image and the reference image and calculating a correlation value between the conversion processed image and the reference image in the position; and a correlation value comparison processing section 28 for comparing each correlation value and outputting a position of a hole corresponding to the maximum correlation value as a position of a hole photographed in the input image.
