The gauge (10) has a base element (22) specifying an installation plane in which the base element is laid on a workpiece. A fastening unit i.e. screw (12), is guided into the workpiece along a guiding path by a guiding device (90). The guiding device includes a guiding element with a guiding body (74), which is arranged at a distance from the base element. A release section (92) is arranged between the base element and the guiding body, so that the guiding element is releasable from the fastening unit that is not fully inserted into the workpiece. An independent claim is also included for a method for driving a fastening unit into a workpiece.
