<p>A commodity, e.g. cheese or meats, non-blocking wrapper (see Group VIII) comprises a durable flexible base sheet, e.g. regenerated cellulose, a continuous surface layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive thereon, and a coating of particulate material, e.g. stearic acid, gelatine, agar-agar, gelatinized starch, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or methyl cellulose, gum tragacanth or karaya, or polyvinyl alcohol, dispersed over the adhesive, which material possesses the properties of swelling by the action of the oil and/or moisture contained in the commodity to provide an intermediate layer on contacting the commodity and being unaffected by the pressure-sensitive adhesive before or after formation of the package seal. The commodity is wrapped with the coated side of the wrapper inwards and subjected to pressure, and if necessary heat, to seal the commodity in the wrapper, and expel trapped air from the package through passages formed by the particulate coating. The particles soften and swell to form a continuous film intimately contacting the commodity and preventing mould growth.</p> |
