<p>A gas compressor or expander (1) has a shaft housing (2) and shaft (3) terminating in a disc (5, 5') within a case .The shaft is supported by a bearing (8) in the case. The bearing has a pressurized gas line (10) linked to the high-pressure stage and bleeds to the ambient air through a valve in the shaft housing. The hydrostatic, gas-lubricated shaft support is independent of the shaft speed. During the start-up phase the shaft enjoys adequate support. The shaft combines great stiffness and resistance to shock loads. The pressure in the gas line to the turbine bearing is at least 5 bar greater than the pressure at the bleed (14).</p> |
