摘要 <p>A method of operating a laser 100 in a projection image display system comprises calculating a modulation level required for the laser to produce a desired brightness/luminance for a displayed image and embedding the modulation levels into image content data. Upon image display, modulation levels are extracted from the image content data and applied to drive an illuminating laser light source. An image display system using laser illumination modulated in accordance with the method is also disclosed. The method/system may be applicable to a projection image display system in which a spatial light modulator (SLM) 140 is illuminated with at least one laser. Multiple lasers (e.g. 302,304,306, figure 3) may be used to generate colour (e.g. RGB) sub-frames of a 2D video frame using frame-sequential colour (FSC) or spatially separated colour (SSC) methods. The method and system is particularly suited to the reconstruction of holographic images using holographic image data to drive the SLM to impart phase characteristics to incident light in order to enable a Fourier lens 120 to recreate the holographic reconstruction at a replay field/screen 180. By temporally modulating the laser illumination the apparent brightness of the resultant image may be controlled to counteract unwanted intensity variationd between different colour laser light sources.</p>
