The method involves separating a service component into a service-specific component (202) and a network protocol-specific component (203), and linking the service component to a service over a configuration interface by a service configuration unit (201). A connection of the protocol-specific component is assigned to the service-specific component by the configuration unit. A network protocol-specific component is automatically generated based on interface specification for the corresponding service-specific component based on a network protocol. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control program for providing functions in an automation system (2) an automation system comprising a control units.
