In a process for the manufacture of sulphur dioxide by burning a sulphide of iron, iron pyrites or gas works spent oxide in a fluidised bed, the temperature of the reaction in the bed is controlled by the addition of ferrous sulphate to the bed. By the use of the process, sulphur dioxide, largely free from arsenic, is produced when iron pyrites is used as raw material. The ferrous sulphate is preferably used in hydrated form, for example as the heptahydrate (copperas) or the monohydrate. Specification 529,335 is referred to.
|
