PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for processing an audio signal are provided to output a mono signal, a stereo signal and a multi-channel signal by controlling the gaining and panning of an object. CONSTITUTION: On the basis of mode selection information included in mix information for controlling an object signal, an object transcoder(510) bypasses a down mix signal or extracts one or more independent object from the down mix signal. If the down mix signal is bypassed, a multichannel decoder(520) creates multichannel information by using the object information and the mix information.
