PURPOSE: A backlight unit and a driving method thereof for a liquid crystal display device are provided to increase a process yield by performing an dimming inspection of a back light lamp. CONSTITUTION: A backlight unit for a liquid crystal display(100) comprises a back light lamp and an inverter circuit(120). The inverter circuit receives an input the control signal. The inverter circuit comprises a dimming testing unit. The dimming testing unit drives the back light lamp by a dimming test pattern.
