<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper carrying device capable of normally carrying paper without causing a skew or the like, even if a load variation is caused when carrying the paper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This paper carrying device includes a paper feeding roller 11 for separably sending out the stacked paper one by one, and a register roller 20 for carrying the paper S sent out of the paper feeding roller 11 in the predetermined direction. The register roller 20 is composed of a main roller 21 and a sub-roller 25 for transmitting rotational driving force from the main roller 21 via gears 23 and 27. The gear 27 separates from meshing with the gear 23 when a load of the paper increases, and when a shaft space between the main roller 21 and the sub-roller 25 expands, a load for bringing the sub-roller 25 into pressure contact with the main roller 21, is increased.
