Disclosed is an illumination device provided with: light sources (12) and an optical member (14) having an input face and output face for controlling the optical distribution characteristics of light emitted from these light sources (12). An input side lens surface (16) or output side lens surface (18) is formed on the input face and/or output face. The optical axes of the light sources (12) are arranged offset from the geometrical central axis of the input side lens face (16) and/or output side lens face (18) that are formed on the input side face or output side face. In this way, an illumination apparatus can be realised that has excellent design characteristics, by controlling the optical distribution characteristics in two directions simply by means of optical members, and an illumination apparatus can be provided having a high degree of horizontal surface illumination and vertical surface illumination.
