PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for coating steel cord suppressing change of the rubber with time during storage of a rubber/steel cord composite used as a reinforcing material for a pneumatic tire and the like in the unvulcanized state to prevent reduction in adhesiveness after vulcanization and to improve peel force. SOLUTION: This rubber composition for coating steel cord includes, based on 100 pts.wt. of a diene-based rubber, 0.3-1.5 pt.wt. of N-t-butyl-2-benzothiazolesulfenimide, and 5-20 pts.wt. of an active zinc oxide having the specific surface area by nitrogen adsorption of≥20 m<SP>2</SP>/g according to the BET method.
